Verstappen showed, again, that he is clear of everyone on the Formula 1 grid, but the same cannot be said about Swiatek, who lost her top status in women’s tennis.

Every weekend has its thrill and drama in the sporting world, and last weekend was no different.

From Europe’s top leagues to the Formula 1 grid and the blue courts of Flushing Meadows, last weekend had it all.

The action kicked off at the Stadio Olimpico, where Roma’s miserable start to the season continued after a 2-1 defeat in their Serie A clash against AC Milan.

Meanwhile, their city rivals Lazio stunned the defending champions Napoli by the same scoreline a day later.

But football was not the only sport that dominated the headlines last weekend in the sporting world. We also witnessed history on the Formula 1 circuit, where Max Verstappen set a new record.

And as per tradition, here is CasinoFans' review of what happened last weekend in the world of sports.

Max Verstappen breaks Sebastian Vettel’s record

It is Verstappen’s world, and we are just living in it. The Dutch driver established his dominance on the Formula 1 circuit after setting a new record for the most consecutive races won.

Verstappen made history on Sunday after winning his tenth consecutive race, becoming the first driver to win ten straight races.

The 25-year-old had equalled Vettel’s record at the Dutch Grand Prix last month but broke the tie after winning the Monza Grand Prix on Sunday.

Carlos Sainz, who took the pole for Ferrari in their home race, finished third behind Sergio Perez, who made it a one-two finish for Red Bull.

Verstappen overtook pole-sitter Sainz before the first and only pit stops to secure victory and surpass Sebastian Vettel's record of nine straight wins from 2013.

The triumph extends Verstappen's lead to 145 points in the drivers' championship from Perez, as Red Bull maintain their unbeaten record in 2023.

"I never would have believed it was possible (to win 10 races in a row), but we had to work for it today and that made it a lot more fun," Verstappen said after the game.

Iga Swiantek loses number one status

When the US Open ends next Sunday, a new champion and world number one will emerge in Women’s tennis after Iga Swiatek was knocked out in the fourth round.

Coming into the tournament, Swiatek was the WTA world No.1, the defending champion and the woman to beat.

However, Swiatek met her Waterloo in her fourth-round clash against Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko was always going to be a difficult match for Swiatek, having beaten the Polish three times in three previous meetings.

It looked like Swiatek would end her jinx against Ostapenko after winning the first set 3-6. But the Latvian stormed back to win the second set 6-3 before demolishing the outgoing World No.1 6-1 in the third set to win 3-6 6-3 6-1.

Following her loss, Swiatek's 75-week stay at No. 1 in the WTA rankings will end next week, with Aryna Sabalenka set to take over.

Manchester United’s got Riced in Arsenal loss

This week’s review will not be complete without talking about the drama that happened at the Emirates on Sunday.

Old rivals Arsenal and Manchester United met in a Premier League clash that lived up to the hype.

Man Utd took the lead in the 28th minute through Marcus Rashford, but it only lasted for a minute as Arsenal hit back immediately through Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal dominated the game after the equaliser but were profligate in front of goal. The missed opportunities almost cost them as Alejandro Garnacho put Man Utd ahead one minute from time.

However, the Gunners were spared as Garnacho’s goal was ruled out by VAR for offside. The decision came back to haunt Erik Ten Hag’s men as Arsenal took the lead in the sixth minute of added time through Declan Rice.

The goals did not end there as Gabriel Jesus sealed a dramatic win for Arteta’s men five minutes later.

What to expect this week

There are no club football games this week, but you can catch up on the Euro, World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. Meanwhile, the US Open is still ongoing, with both finals set to take place this weekend.
